About Us

The Hospice Care Association volunteers provide support to people living with life-limiting illness, their families and carers.
  • Volunteers offer care in the client’s own home, in specialist palliative care units, at the Royal Hobart Hospital, in other hospitals and some nursing homes and rural multi-purpose centres.
  • In the community setting, volunteers offer respite for carers, companionship, assistance to complete tasks, errands, outings – whatever is helpful for each client.
  • In hospital settings we will sit with patients, run errands, support family visitors, give gentle hand and foot massage.
  • In rural areas, volunteers provide support to residents and patients in district hospitals, multi-purpose centres and in client’s own homes.
We work in close partnership with the Tasmanian Palliative Care Service, and other organisations to ensure that clients are able to receive the care most appropriate to their needs.

There are a number of ways that individual members of the community can support the work of Hospice Care.  To find out about being a client support volunteer, click on the Volunteer Application button.  If you’d like to support us in some other way, one of the following options might suit you better.

Friends of Hospice

Are people who want to help the Association but don’t want to have direct client contact.
If you have skills in
  • Fund-raising
  • Publicity and marketing
  • Computer skills
  • Graphics and design
  • Events organising
  • Liaison with business
  • Newsletter skills
your skills would be very valuable in helping us to maintain and extend our services, and to inform the community about our work.  Hospice Friends are warmly invited to join our social events.

Donations

The Hospice Care Association Southern Tas receives a grant from the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services, which meets our basic running costs – salaries, administration, volunteer reimbursements, volunteer training.
However, we do rely on fund-raising and donations to expand and extend our services.
We hold an annual button day, an annual concert and other smaller fund-raising events, such as market stalls.
We are grateful for assistance with these events.

Membership

Any individual, business or organisation can become a member of the Association by payment of a small annual subscription.
Members are entitled to:
  • Stand for election to the management committee.
  • Vote at the AGM.
  • Receive a copy of the Volunteers’ Newsletter (published 3 times per year).

Non-client volunteering

From time to time we need help with administrative tasks, such as copying and collating newsletters, educational materials etc, keeping our library tidy and up to date, filing and so on.
Three or four times per year we hold a working bee in the Palliative Care Unit garden, to weed, prune and prepare for the next season.

A Volunteers’ Newsletter is published three or four times per year, and we often need assistance with various aspects of this task.
